Making a safer roads for all drivers...

What should we do to make our roads safer?

Remember each individual must act to make the roads safer for all...

  • Speed: No one wants to be responsible for death or injury, yet people die on the roads-caused in part by excessive speed. It is very simple - the greater the  speed  at impact, the more damage, you will do ; to youself, your vehicle, and others.Though reducing your speed may not avoid accidents but it will definetly damage less!!! When the unexpected occurs,a slower speed gives you a couple of extra moments to avoid or lessen the impact.Driving at or below the speed limit helps to protect yourself and the other road users.Drive slow.
  • Seat belts:Everyone knows they should wear the seat belts, but many people still don't realise how dangerous it is not to wear a seat belts. In a crash ,you will hit with a force between  30 and 60 times your own body weight.Always click before you drive.
  • Mobile Phones:Remember that a driver's reaction is 50% slower than normal when driving and using a mobile phones. It is dangerous because a mobile conversation  distracts form the mental concentration needed to drive safely.Switch it off when you drive.
  • Fatigue:  Fatigue related collisions tend to be more serious ,possibly because of the higher speeds involved and because the driver is unable to take any action (or brake). Have proper rest.
  • Alcohol:If you mus drink at all...then dont drive.Take a taxi  or  let somone who is not drunk to drink. You risk of losing your driving license because of a couple of pegs .Dont drink drive.
  • Tailgating :It is an offence if  you follow a vehicle in front of you  too close. Always keep a safe distance to avoid accidents.

What  to do if you have a crash

  • Stop immediately.
  • Use headlights, indicator lights or hazard lights to warn other drivers, and to light up the scene if it is dark.
  • If possible send someone to warn oncoming drivers.
  • Help the injured.
  • Dial 111  to make contact with Traffic Police (112 for  Ambulance) if anyone is killed or injured.Do not move the vehicle from the spot ,wait for the traffic police to come and  investigate the case.
  • Clear the road of broken glass and debris.

After an crash has occurred always be mindful of your own safety, as well as that of others. Whatever you do, always be on the alert for the dangers posed by vehicles still using the road.
